On May 29, 2020, Zhang Shaohong, Deputy Secretary of the JingShan Municipal Party Committee, chaired a special coordination meeting on the construction of the Shendi Company’s 5G IoT demonstration farm for exporting 300,000 laying hens to Hong Kong and Macao. The meeting was held in the second-floor conference room of Hubei Shendi Agricultural Science and Trade Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Shendi Company). Prior to the meeting, leaders from JingShan City and responsible officials from relevant towns, districts, and municipal departments gathered and traveled by bus to the Shendi Company’s under-construction laying-hen breeding base in Qianchang Village, Qianchang Town, to inspect and provide guidance. During the meeting, attendees listened to a report by Yang Yan, Chairman of Shendi Company, on the project’s progress and the issues that needed to be coordinated and resolved. They also heard a presentation on the smart laying-hen farming operation platform developed by the 5G IoT project contractor. The meeting discussed and deliberated on urgent issues requiring resolution during the project’s construction, including environmental impact assessment approval, land-use planning, adjustments to reserved development land, supporting road infrastructure upgrades and renovations, and the application for designation as a provincial-level leading enterprise in poverty alleviation. Representatives from relevant towns, districts, and municipal departments delivered statements expressing their support and fully endorsing the project’s high-standard planning and construction.

The meeting concluded that, through the implementation of this project, leading enterprises not only safeguard food safety—their very lifeline—but also help village-level organizations enhance their operational governance capabilities and lead impoverished households out of poverty and toward prosperity. The project has yielded significant economic, social, and ecological benefits, and serves as a model for replication in other townships and villages across Jingshan City. By developing industrial consortia, it can play a pivotal role in boosting rural revitalization and ultimately establish the poultry and egg industry as a pillar of Jingshan City’s agricultural economy and rural revitalization efforts. The project supports the application of 5G IoT, data analytics, and blockchain technologies to strengthen information infrastructure, promote production standardization, implement product-specific labeling, and advance e-commerce-based marketing. It will also help perfect the traceability system for agricultural product quality and safety, creating Hubei Province’s first demonstration farm showcasing the application of 5G IoT technology in layer chicken farming.

In alignment with the JingShan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government’s strategies for poverty alleviation, rural revitalization, and building beautiful countryside, Shendi Company has developed a replicable industrial model. In 2021, the company sought to establish the JingShan National Modern Layer Chicken Industrial Park. To achieve this goal, the company carried out a series of measures, including re-electing the board of directors of the former JingShan Shendi Layer Chicken Breeding Cooperative, adjusting its membership, and diluting Shendi Holdings’ stake. As a result, members who had ceased engaging in poultry farming were removed, while new members—experienced professionals in breeding and management—were brought in. The cooperative’s registered capital was increased from the original 5.4 million yuan to 20 million yuan. Among this amount, impoverished households registered in Qianchang Village contributed 3 million yuan, accounting for a 15% equity stake.

The total investment for the project amounts to 28 million yuan. The project involves completely clearing and rebuilding the former Qianchang layer chicken farm owned by Shendi Company, with a newly constructed breeding facility capable of housing 300,000 hens. Three automated egg-handling systems from German company Ruben, as well as one egg-cleaning, sorting, and packaging production line from Dutch company Moba, have been introduced. The farm’s feeding equipment is among the most advanced in China today, featuring an eight-tier, fully enclosed, automated layering system. For young chickens, an automated, temperature-controlled layering system is employed, placing this facility among the most technologically advanced in the country. The project adopts a new model of antibiotic-free and clean farming practices, producing safe, high-quality, green fresh eggs that ensure peace of mind and safety for both consumers and food producers.

Shendi Company has taken the lead in launching a smart egg-laying hen farming operation platform built on technologies such as 5G networks, the Internet of Things, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data, enabling intelligent industrial operations. Based on the platform’s capabilities, the system supports multi-dimensional functions including intelligent device management, production and operational management, data management, comprehensive security monitoring, and supply chain management—thus ensuring production safety, enhancing operational efficiency, tracking product lifecycles, and assisting management personnel in making informed decisions. Ultimately, this approach achieves visibility into the current situation, detectability of issues, controllability of risks, and predictability of the future. The project’s conceptual design has received high praise from the city’s mobile operator, which has pledged full support by prioritizing 5G network coverage in the project’s location and striving to secure provincial-level backing for inclusion in the first batch of 5G base station construction plans for counties and districts in 2020. This will enable Shendi Company to provide efficient and high-quality services, positioning itself as the first 5G IoT-based egg-laying hen farming demonstration base in Hubei Province. In addition, Shendi Company plans to share its developed smart egg-laying hen platform with egg-laying hen farmers across Jing Shan City. By leveraging technology to empower the industry, Shendi aims to guide farmers toward more scientific and efficient production practices, thereby driving the entire industry to become a national leader.

Upon completion in October 2020, the project is expected to establish one new demonstration base for fresh egg exports to Hong Kong and Macao. This base will annually raise 500,000 young chickens, produce 3,600 tons of fresh eggs, 2,700 tons of cleaned eggs, and 4,000 tons of organic fertilizer each year. The project will generate an additional output value of 95 million yuan and earn foreign exchange earnings from exports totaling 3 million U.S. dollars. As a result, all 42 impoverished households in Qianchang Village will be stably lifted out of poverty. Shendi Company has pledged to provide three guarantees for the registered impoverished households in Qianchang Village: preserving the value of their equity shares, ensuring minimum dividend distributions, and guaranteeing that any retained profits will be reinvested into society through secondary dividend distributions.
