In the afternoon, the research team visited the Shendi Egg Products Industrial Park in the Jingshan Economic Development Zone. They held a symposium in the company’s second-floor conference room. Yang Yan, President of the Hubei Poultry Association and Chairman of Shendi Group, delivered a briefing to the research team on “The Integration of Local Specialty Egg-Laying Chicken Breeds in Hubei Shendi.” His report covered the background of the integration of local specialty egg-laying chicken breeds, the current development status of the local specialty egg-laying chicken industry, the integration of advantageous resources in this sector, and future development goals.

Laying hens represent a major advantage of Hubei’s agricultural sector, and “authentic Hubei eggs” are highly sought-after in the Hong Kong market. Superior breeding stock is the “chip” of the egg-laying chicken industry—and also the very source of “authentic Hubei eggs.” China has documented 81 local chicken breeds in its National Atlas of Local Poultry Genetic Resources, of which eight are listed in Hubei Province’s National Genetic Resources Registry, accounting for 9.88% of the national total. These breeds include: Jianghan Chicken, Hongshan Chicken, Shuanglian Chicken, Yunyang Big Chicken, Yunyang White-Feathered Black-Boned Chicken, Jingyang Chicken, Macheng Green-Shelled Egg Chicken, and Jingmen Black-Feathered Green-Shelled Egg Chicken. Hubei Province’s local specialty laying hen resources are among the leading ones in China.

Hubei Province is home to 50 million locally distinctive laying hens. In 2019, our province released the country’s first group standard for “free-range eggs.” Hubei Province ranks first nationwide in both the number of native laying hens in stock and the volume of egg production. For many years, Hubei Province has also topped the nation in foreign exchange earnings from egg exports.

The “Jingmen Black Feather Green-Shell Egg Chicken,” bred by Hubei Shendi Agricultural Science and Trade Co., Ltd., the “Xinhua Chicken,” bred by Hubei Xinhua Ecological Livestock and Poultry Development Co., Ltd., and the “Yichang Shuanglian Chicken,” bred by Hubei MinDa Agricultural and Pastoral Development Co., Ltd., are currently undergoing resource integration to leverage Hubei’s unique advantages in local egg chicken breeding. A plan is underway to establish a provincial-level group company specializing in local specialty egg chicken breeding in Hubei Province. Currently, state-owned capital and social funds—including the Wuhan National Agricultural Innovation Fund, Wuhan GaoNong, and Wuhan Huipu Fund—have conducted two on-site inspections of Shendi, Xinhua, and MinDa breeding enterprises respectively. It has been confirmed that these funds will provide investment support to help the three companies jointly establish the Hubei Provincial Group Company for Local Specialty Egg Chicken Breeding.

The future plan is to establish a breeding gene bank in Wuhan Guanggu, China’s “Seed Capital,” to develop nationally approved varieties, promote the upgrading of the seed industry, break through the foreign “chip” blockade, and support rural revitalization.
